Status of Military and VA Health Record Sharing

Military and Veterans Affairs officials are years away from fully sharing patient health records, according to a recent report from the Government Accountability Office.  But Defense Department officials said they’re confident the two bureaucracies will reach that goal in the next two years, citing recent improvements to the system and planned advances in coming years.

Defense Health Agency Achieves Full Operational Capability

On Oct. 1, the Defense Health Agency (DHA) celebrates its achievement of full operational capability, two years after the agency was first established.  In 2011, the Deputy Secretary of Defense convened a task force to look at options for the long-term governance of the Military Health System. From that task force was born the idea of the DHA, an organization built for the Services by the Services – under the auspices of the Army, Navy and Air Force medical departments.

Veterans Service Organizations and other similar associations have a significant positive impact on military and veterans benefits.  An MOAA article summarizes some of the benefits won through the lobbying efforts of such organizations since 2001 and the resulting financial impacts.  As the article says, membership in such associations matters.  The membership size of the organization can affect its influence on our lawmakers.
